Sally = Change

Sally Chen is a new, fresh, and exciting candidate for city council. She is not part of Redmond's old guard of entrenched politicians. Fresh perspectives are what we need! Fresh ideas are what we will get!

Why Sally Chen

As campaigns drag on, I get tired of being buried in soundbites and everything descending into why you should NOT vote for the opponent.

When Sally Chen came to my door, I asked her to tell me what she will achieve on the council. Here is what I got:

1.She will make lines of communication more open between council and citizens. Her campaign is based on talking to people, one on one. Hearing their ideas and making judgments from that. I like the idea of a councilperson wanting to hear from people first.

2.Sally got rather passionate about being a servant to the people. She said that she will always make decisions based on the people of Redmond, not politics. One thing that is obvious about Sally is that she can stand on her own. It is impressive to see such a bright, caring person, stand up for what she believes in - for Redmond first!

i left my doorstep feeling like a positive change was coming to Redmond.

Today's forecast: 100% chance of "You gotta be kidding me!"

A couple of weeks ago, Kim Allen wrote an editorial in the Redmond Reporter saying that harsh weather conditions damaged Sally Chen’s yard signs. Well, I was intrigued by this and went out looking for damaged Chen signs to see if weather was responsible – it was not.
First off, Sally’s opponent, Mrs. Allen, made her arrant claim of weather damage on day 12 of 14 clear, dry, and wind free days.
I drove around and found a Chen sign that was ripped from the stake. There are 3 divots from where the screws go in, and then 3 narrow cuts going from the divots to the end of the sign. It looks like the stake was held in one hand and the sign in another and PULL!
I found another where the sign had been sliced off and another that was melted!
I am not suggesting that Mrs. Allen’s campaign is completely responsible for all the vandalism. I am just suggesting that Mrs. Allen not think Redmond voters are that stupid. An honorable, statesman-like way to handle the vandalism would have been if Mrs. Allen called for an end to the vandalism and pledged that her supporters will never touch one of Sally’s signs. But no, she blamed the weather, even going as far as to say that Sally is not familiar with hostile weather. Sally grew up in Georgia where their weather is quite extreme, so nice try Kim.
I am just having trouble believing Mrs. Allen’s explanations for the vandalism. I encourage Redmond to see her explanations for what they are – a weak excuse from someone with weak convictions.

Redmond City Council Position 4

The only contested race this year is between Kim Allen and Sally Chen for position 4. Allen has a record both as a council member and as a hearing examiner. Neither is particularly good. Allen is bright and personable. She is a former trial lawyer and is generally more of a lawyer than an advocate for her constituents. She is often prickly and quite arrogant on the dais.

Allen has the support of two council members, as does Chen. Her recent mailer reads like the former mayor's little black book. While there are many reasons to defeat Allen her extreme views on property rights and her support for Jim Robinson's viciously anti-business campaign are enough to recommend that she not be re-elected.

Sally Chen is a breath of fresh air and will be a welcome addition to the council. Chen is young, intelligent and will bring the perspective of a new generation of voters to our city government. It's interesting that right now all but one council member, David Carson, are 50 plus years old. Redmond needs to encourage our younger citizens to fully engage in our city governance.

Chen is learning fast and has spent countless hours knocking on doors and talking to voters, business, and community leaders. There is a good chance that you've met her yourself when she knocked on your door as my neighbors and I have. If you haven't you probably will.

I like the energy and enthusiasm. I met the future at my door and that future for Redmond is Sally Chen.

Her website is www.sallyjchen.com. Check it out. She has a very, very impressive list of endorsements, including two current Redmond City Council members. So the challenger has as much support on the council as the incumbent! Chen also has the support of county council members and the Washington Attorney General amongst many others. That is very impressive.

I like Chen's intelligence, energy and passion for service and I like the fact that she brings the perspective of a whole new group of voters who are an increasingly important part of our community.

I'm going to vote for Sally Chen for Redmond City Council.

CIty Council Races

There are three council positions on the ballot. John Stilin and Pat Vache do not have opponents. Both are excellent choices. Vache has proven to be a thoughtful adn dedicated council member and his return is welcomed. John Stilin will be a great addition to the council. He has two home in Redmond, one in the Viewpoint neighborhood and the other on Education Hill. He has been an active member of the community with a strong focus on the arts.

The only contested race is for position 4 between Kim Allen and exciting newcomer Sally Chen.
